Come autumn, running before or after work often means running in the dark. But there’s no reason to stop: with a few good habits, night running can be just as safe as it is enjoyable.
1. Make yourself visible from a distance
This is rule number one. Dark clothing literally disappears in the night. Opt for light or neon colors and, above all, reflective elements that bounce back headlight beams. Our reflective kit (vest, headband, and bracelet) is designed for just that.
2. Light up your path
Being seen isn't enough: you also need to see where you're stepping. A chest lamp illuminates the ground in front of you without bouncing around like a headlamp, and keeps your hands free.
3. Signal yourself from behind
A flashing red light on your back immediately marks your position for vehicles and cyclists approaching from behind.
4. Choose a known and lit route
Nighttime is not the time to explore new paths. Prefer routes you know well, with even ground and, if possible, street lighting.
5. Run facing traffic
In the absence of a sidewalk, run on the left side of the road, facing oncoming traffic: you can see vehicles approaching and anticipate them.
6. Keep one ear free
Music helps you keep going, but at night, your hearing compensates for reduced visibility. Lower the volume or use only one earbud.
7. Let someone know
Share your route and expected return time, and keep your phone with you, securely tucked in a running belt.
